Sistine Demon Ready for 2015 Victoria Handicap Defence

April 1st, 2015

Sistine Demon posted arguably his most impressive performance to date when taking out last year’s edition of the Victoria Handicap (1400m), and has been confirmed for a defence of the Group 3 title at Caulfield on Saturday.

Jumping from the gates well in last year’s Victoria Handicap, Sistine Demon was immediately led for the fore of the file of 14 by Jamie Kah and never appeared in doubt; extending in the final straight to hit the line six lengths in the clear of closest rival Gig.

Trainer Andrew Noblet was pleased with the performance mustered by the Excites gelding in a 1200m gallop on the Caulfield course proper on Monday morning and is confident he will produce a competitive performance in the 2015 Victoria Handicap.

“He was taken on which didn’t help him at all but I thought he stuck on OK being second-up over 1400 metres,” Noblet told AAP.

“I’m looking forward to another improved run this time.

“You’ve got to take him on trust a bit but at the moment I’m pretty satisfied he’s going OK.

“He should be competitive but it looks a pretty good race this year on the nominations. He would want to be on his A-game.”

Posting eight wins and a further four minor place finishes through his 22 competitive start career so far, Sistine Demon undoubtedly found career-best form to date over the 2013/14 summer and autumn; taking out five-consecutive Melbourne metropolitan races before placing second to Sweet As Bro in the Listed Kilmore Cup (1600m).

Returning to the winner’s circle in the Listed Super Saturday Stakes (1400m) in early March, the gelding out of Famous Painter was clear favourite in betting markets to win the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) on Mat 10th, but was unable to match the late pace of Smokin’ Joey, beating only one runner home.

Placing a disappointing 14th in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up this time, Sistine Demon improved for a credible fourth in the Listed My Kitchen Rules Stakes (1400m) on March 14th and appears in line for further improvement on Saturday.

The 2014 Victoria Handicap final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
