The Victoria Handicap is a great Group 3 thoroughbred race held at Melbourne’s Caulfield racecourse as part of the Easter Saturday celebrations each year.
It is one of two Group status events held on the Easter Saturday meeting along with the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m).

The Victoria Handicap is a 1400m gallop run under open handicap conditions and is worth $125, 000 in total stakes.
Easter Cup Day is the final major race meeting held in Melbourne during the autumn racing season and as such always draws a tremendous amount of interest.
Many runners that begin their autumn racing campaign with the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) finish up their Melbourne run with the Victoria Handicap as it is run over a similar middle-sprint distance and is run under the same conditions.
Because of the high quality races being conducted in Sydney on the same weekend, elite events including the richest race for two-year-olds the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes, the level of competition running in the Victoria Handicap is not as top-class as earlier Melbourne autumn carnival events.

History
The Victoria Handicap was first run in 1949 and Ungar was the inaugural winner. The event was elevated from its initial Principal race status to a prestigious Group 3 race in 1980.
A number of quality runners have won the Victoria Handicap over the years including Debrief (2002 & 2003), Rustic Dream (1998) and Mister Elegant (1994).
