Black Heart Bart was unlucky to finish second in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) a fortnight ago and remains outright $3.40 favourite in 2016 Victoria Handicap betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Tried And Tired ($6) and Charmed Harmony ($7.50).

Will Black Heart Bart justify favouritism and return to winning form in the Victoria Handicap or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?

1st

Red Bomber ($9)

Red Bomber has returned to racing in typically strong form this time and represents terrific value for money at current $9 Victoria Handicap odds. Posting an impressive career total of ten wins and three minors through only nineteen starts, Red Bomber secured a number of commendable results for Mick Price in 2015; namely a win over two-time Group 1 winner Trust In A Gust in the Vobis Gold Sprint (1200m) in late autumn. Having transferred to the care of David Hayes and Tom Dabernig this season, the Red Ransom gelding charged home to win the Group 3 TAB Rewards Stakes (1400m) first-up and should be given a gem of a ride by Nick Hall.

2nd

Sertorius ($34)

Sertorius is a proven first-up performer and will have no issue performing to a high standard in the Victoria Handicap with only 55kgs in tow. Undoubtedly the stable star for Jamie Edwards through a busy racing career, the Galileo gelding returned in 2014 for second in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) before taking out the talent-rich Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m). Having continued to impress through the Spring Carnival, Sertorius has not been seen at the races since beating half the field home in the Melbourne Cup (3200m) and finishing fourth in the Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) on November 14th.

3rd

Black Heart Bart ($3.40)

Former Perth galloper Black Heart Bart has clearly kicked up a gear since arriving at Darren Weir’s stables and carries excellent form into the 2016 Victoria Handicap. Finishing outside the first three only a handful of times in twenty-seven career starts, the Blackfriars gelding won all of the Listed Birthday Stakes (1200m), Group 3 Northerly Stakes (1420m) and Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) upon resuming in summer before finishing fourth in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m). Having ended his west coast tenure second in the Group 2 CB Cox Stakes (2100m), Black Heart Bart was unlucky to finish second in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) first-up on March 12th.
